Fire Station

Period:

1919

Former Location:

Yashima Nakamachi, Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture

Designation:

Registered Tangible Cultural Property

This building once stood in Yashima’s Shinbanba, along the pilgrimage route to Yashima Shrine. Tonsho refers to a building where firefighters were posted away from the main fire station. Three of the four walls are plank-lined, and the front is taken up by large double doors. The upper half of both doors is of narrowly spaced wooden lathes, giving the building a touch of elegance despite its small scale. It currently holds a hand pump made in 1919 and a small, powered pump from 1967.
